This piece was part of the exhibit called A
Declaration of Immigration in Chicago, Illinois. This exhibit includes artwork
by over 70 artists that showcase the many experiences and viewpoints of
immigrant communities in the United States. This artwork showcases a variety of
people walking from Mexico (right) to the United States (left). In the middle
or the border between Mexico and the U.S. is a shower filter showering a young
woman. This piece examines the process in which Latinos are Americanized. They
are “whitewashed” and leave their culture behind because they must assimilate
to the American way in order to survive. Although the art piece was created by
a male, the main and most important focus is the woman in the center. Her
identity is being washed away and created to become someone that society views
as correct. She comes to the U.S. seeking a better future but during the
journey she forgets where she comes from.
